SDG 11 Sustainable cities

< Back to the overview of the SDG’s

The targets for this SDG can be seen here.

Cities are hubs for ideas, commerce, culture, science, productivity, social development and much more. At their best, cities have enabled people to make social and economic progress.

However, there are many challenges to sustaining cities in a way that continues to create jobs and wealth without taxing land and resources. Common urban challenges include congestion, lack of resources to provide basic services, lack of adequate housing and declining infrastructure.

The challenges facing cities can be overcome in ways that allow them to continue to grow and grow, while improving resource use and reducing pollution and poverty. The future we want includes cities with opportunities for all, with access to basic services, energy, housing, transport and more.
